Stephen Dobson
Stephen Dobson is an engineer and the Managing Director of Ramtec Pty Ltd, established in 1979 as Australia’s first rammed earth construction company. Since then, Ramtec has built hundreds of structures across Australia, including award‑winning wineries, schools, resorts, hotels, cathedrals and endless houses. Among its most notable projects are the Dobson House in Cottesloe, Perth’s first rammed earth residence, which won multiple national awards in 1982, the Margaret River Catholic Church in Western Australia, and the Kakadu National Park Visitor Information Centre in the Northern Territory, which also won numerous awards. These landmark projects showcase the durability, beauty, and environmental benefits of rammed earth.
Stephen is also a founding member and founding committee member of the Earth Building Association of Australia (EBAA), where he has played a pivotal role in promoting earth building nationally. Stephen has consulted to many start-ups which have grown to become successful rammed earth builders in their own right, both across Australia and overseas. Through international presentations, publications, and decades of hands‑on building, he continues to champion innovation, craftsmanship, and sustainability in Australia’s construction landscape.
